Urinary bladder

What is the urinary bladder?

The urinary bladder is a hollow, muscular organ, which is located in the lesser pelvis under the peritoneum and behind the pubic physis. The bladder can be divided into the base (fundus), middle part - body (corpus) and vertex (apex). Its wall is formed by mucosa, thin submucosa and musculature. The fundus receives both ureters and ends in the urethra.

What is the function of the urinary bladder?

It serves to collect the urine flowing from the kidneys and to expel it through the urethra from the body. The bladder works in a similar way as a balloon. The inlet of urine causes gradual increase of the inner pressure, muscular fibers adapt to the urine volume and the bladder distends until the moment when it is full.

The first compulsion to urinate in an adult comes when it is filled by 150 ml, more pronounced compulsion is felt at 300-400 m. The compulsion can be freely suppressed until the volume of 700-750 ml.
